La France a bénéficié du Programme d'investissements d'avenir "AKER - Betterave 2020, l'innovation compétitive", qui a pour ambition de doubler le rythme de croissance annuelle du rendement en sucre par hectare de la betterave. Il constitue une rupture scientifique en allant rechercher toute la diversité génétique disponible au niveau mondial, et en pratiquant le génotypage avant le phénotypage. Il met au point du matériel génétique nouveau, disponible pour être introduit dans les futures variétés de betteraves. Il offre également des outils et des méthodes innovantes dans les domaines du génotypage et du phénotypage, accompagnant les acteurs de la filière - betteraviers et sucriers - dans leur impérative amélioration de la compétitivité.
Cet ouvrage s'adresse principalement aux scientifiques et aux professionnels, et à tous ceux que la recherche, le développement et la formation dans le registre du vivant intéressent. Il vient clôturer huit années de travaux pluridisciplinaires rassemblant une centaine de collaborateurs.
