Hercule Poirot doit partir de Londres en autocar pour rejoindre le domaine huppé de Kingfisher Hill. Richard Devonport a convoqué le célèbre détective afin d'innocenter sa fiancée Helen du meurtre de son frère Frank Devonport. Le trajet est brutalement interrompu lorsqu'une femme affolée demande à descendre. Elle affirme que si elle reste assise à sa place, elle sera assassinée. Le reste du voyage se déroule sans encombre, mais l'incident pique la curiosité de Poirot. Peu de temps après, ses craintes se voient confirmées quand un cadavre est découvert, accompagné d'une note macabre...
