En 1983, puis en 1989 et en 2006, Willy Ronis fait don de l'ensemble de son oeuvre à l'État français. Pour accompagner ce geste, il rassemble dans des albums une sélection de ses meilleures photographies ; pour chacune, il écrit un commentaire fait de souvenirs et d'anecdotes, s'attachant aux conditions de la prise de vue et aux informations relatives au tirage. Au total, ce sont 590 photographies qui forment un portrait sensible et autobiographique de Willy Ronis. Cet ouvrage exceptionnel reproduit l'intégralité du contenu, jusqu'alors inédit, de ces albums.

Je ne crois pas du tout qu'une fée spécialement attachée à ma personne ait, tout au long de ma vie, semé des petits miracles sur mon chemin. Willy Ronis (1910-2009) was one of the great photographers of the twentieth century. Selected by MoMA curator Edward Steichen for inclusion in two groundbreaking exhibitions, The Family of Man and Five French Photographers, his work depicts the poetic and poignant reality of life in postwar France.
