C'est en s'inspirant des jardins maniéristes de Bomarzo et du parc Güell aménagé par Antoni Gaudí à Barcelone que Niki de Saint Phalle et son partenaire Jean Tinguely ont créé le jardin des Tarots. Vingt-deux sculptures monumentales de douze à quinze mètres de haut représentant les arcanes majeurs du jeu de tarot agrémentent ce vaste domaine situé à l'extrême sud de la Toscane. Ces sculptures peintes en polyester ou béton armé s'agrémentent de miroirs, de riches mosaïques et de fragments de céramique et de verre de Murano polychromes. Univers fantastique, le jardin des Tarots constitue le sommet de l'oeuvre Niki de Saint Phalle.
Le présent ouvrage, qui inclut des textes de l'artiste dans lesquels elle exprime ses intentions, est à la fois un guide du jardin des Tarots et un chef-d'oeuvre graphique auquel elle a directement participé.
